Dan,
Thanks for posting MHS class of 1954. I knew many of those in this class as I graduated in 1956. My brother Russell Leach graduated in this class and went on to teach for many years at Carroll Middle School. — Gerald Leach

Thanks, Gerald; your brother Russell was one of my favorite teachers. Here are my top 5: Mrs. Eisiminger, 6th-grade teacher at Valley Inn; Miss Baxter, geography teacher at Carroll; Mr. Borchello, science (maybe biology?) teacher at Carroll; Mrs. Morris, English teacher at H.S. and your brother Russell at Carroll.
Most P.E. teachers at that time were disgruntled coaches who would rather hang out with their own teams and would just “phone in ” their gym classes. Russell always had control, but all the kids loved him. He had us learning about trampolines and even archery. That was pretty radical for P.E. back in the early 1970s.

Dan,
Appreciate your comments regarding my brother. Whatever my brother did, he devoted his entire being and gave his very best. When with him over the years, I have witnessed many of his former students greeting him with a hand shake or hug and telling him he was their favorite teacher. — Gerald

I have Flames from ’63, ’64, ’65 and ’66 (my class). Each cover is unique and it is hard to choose one that is better (although I think they are all better than ’54!) 1963 makes a stunning use of the school entrance, 1964 is a beautiful shade of blue, and 1965 uses our school colors and mascot. For 1966, our class took a different approach from other years in that the size is bigger and the cover has more than one texture. What I don’t like about 1966 is the quality of the pages and photos. Are there copies of all the Flames somewhere? Perhaps in the MAHS in Mon City? It’s a shame what has happened to our high school. Thank you for all your posts highlighting our city’s history.

I Married the one with the bow tie. I wonder if his mother made him wear it for his senior picture. She made him wear knickers in grade school. He hated them! We’ll be married 65 years on 9/5/‘23.

As graduates of the Class of 1954, Nancy and I recognize everybody. I cannot believe I wore a bow tie to have my picture taken. Richard Hunter designed the Flame cover. I know we have lost many of our class mates but there are some of us still going strong. We see Bill Parnell usually every year as he winters in Florida. Doug and Nancy (Zani) Reynolds

I guess I was not the only one wearing a bow tie.

Hello! I love reading “Lost Monongahela” and want to thank you for it, but my email has nothing to do with the recent posts…it does, however, ask a question that you may be able to answer. I’m a 1968 graduate of MHS, My first job out of high school was at Standard Dry Wall Products at their office behind Hill’s Restaurant in New Eagle. Would you have photos, or know where I might find any? I’m chronicling my early years for my kids and would love to have photos if there are any available. Thanks a million! I don’t have any photos of Standard Dry Wall Products but there is a good chance that Richard Dawson who frequently posts on the Facebook group “I’m From Monongahela, Pa.” does. I bet he or somebody there could help you. Thanks for following Lost Monongahela!
