Monongahela Newspaper Editor Recommends McKeesport Residents Drink Beer

The editor of the Monongahela Daily Republican writes that McKeesport residents have beer as their only option:

1891_01-15_McKeesport_corpseMcKeesport people are in a fix. The body of a man who is missing, is thought to be under the reservoir, and it is covered with thick ice so that the basin cannot be thoroughly dragged. Most people think the corpse is in there, and every time a McKeesporter drinks a glass of hydrant water he imagines he tastes a toe, or a finger or a knee cap. The only resource left to the inhabitants is to drink beer.

– Chill W. Hazzard, Editor, Daily Republican, January 15, 1891.

  1. Can you do a story on Wylie School? I think it was on Park Ave. not sure. All 10 of my aunts and uncles went there.

    Thank you very much.

You will never know how much I look forward to your posts, blogs, etc. Love all the pictures.

  2. Keep the articles coming in. Do you have any articles or info from 1925 Vista7 coalminers and their families too?
My grandfather Stephan Janos (Yanos) sp was killed in the coalmine and my uncle was hurt, Stephan Yanos.
They each spelled the last name differently so we cannot locate where he (grandfather) was buried.
You have anything it would be great and any pictures of the coalminers back then
