To Good People Who Keep Our Town Walkable, Except…

Just wanted to give a shout-out to the folks who have diligently kept their sidewalks shoveled this year. I appreciate it because I’ve been walking more, not only for the health benefits but because it just feels great to get out of the house for some fresh air. Walking takes only a little more time than driving for quick errands in town and sometimes it is faster when you consider all the Main St. traffic.

I live near 5th street, and yesterday I walked from my house to a meeting near 2nd Street; then uptown to get some Chinese food; then around 6:00 pm, I walked up to Foodland to get a few groceries. So kudos to all businesses and homeowners who have been clearing their sidewalks and keeping our downtown walkable for people like me.

Family Dollar - turd in the punch bowl.
💩 Family Dollar, Monongahela, Pa.

But… there is one big turd in the punchbowl: Family Dollar. Their sidewalk has been full of ice and snow every time I’ve been down that way this winter. And it’s not like they can’t afford to shovel it because they are owned by SKM Partners, a huge New York private equity firm that also owns Dollar Tree. Also, they don’t contribute to community events and aren’t members of the chamber. Plenty of stores like Cox Market and Foodland are locally owned and more worthy of your support.

  1. Thanks Betty. I should have also mentioned that they don’t pick up trash that accumulates around the back of their store along Chess St. but I didn’t want to sound too negative. And other stores like Cox’s have been so amazing during the pandemic. When WalMart kept screwing up my mom & dad’s orders for curbside pickup they started using Cox’s service (traveling all the way from Daisytown) and it was wonderful.
